An international response desk receives a USGS catalogue snapshot. Before requesting ShakeMap and contacting regional teams, it needs a reproducible list of strong, shallow events from the quarter. The point map is a screening queue, not an impact map: magnitude and hypocentral depth do not say which communities experienced damaging shaking.
Write a Python script that reads /data/events.geojson and assigns a GeoDataFrame to result. Keep events with preferred magnitude at least 6.0 and hypocentral depth at most 70 km, both boundaries inclusive. Return the original WGS 84 epicentre points with event_id, mag, depth_km, place, and alert. The dataset is a fixed USGS snapshot for 1 January through 31 March 2025 UTC; alert = unassigned is an explicit missing category, not a green alert.
geopandas, pandas, numpy, shapely and pyproj are available. The server mounts each named input at /data/<dataset id>.geojson; this one is /data/events.geojson. Do not write a file. Run previews your own result; Submit executes the script again and grades result. Use the map to decide where to request detailed USGS ShakeMap products before making exposure or damage claims.
/data/events.geojson — EPSG:4326; the geometry is in geometry (Point).
| column | type | meaning |
|---|---|---|
event_id | string | USGS event identifier |
mag | number | Preferred magnitude |
depth_km | number | Hypocentral depth (km) |
time_utc | date | Event origin time in UTC |
place | string | USGS place description |
tsunami | boolean | USGS tsunami flag; not a hazard forecast |
alert | string | PAGER alert if assigned, otherwise unassigned |
These are where the teaching is. Read them twice.
USGS event feeds supply rapid origin information; detailed shaking and exposure decisions rely on ShakeMap and related products (https://earthquake.usgs.gov/data/shakemap/).
