A Sydney parks team is loading mapped playgrounds into a field-inspection app that accepts one point per source feature. Area features need an interior representative point; the receiving app refuses a geographic CRS, unexpected columns or a wrong layer name.
Prepare the downloaded sydney-playgrounds-raw layer in a desktop GIS and upload one GeoPackage layer named playground_sites.
| Incoming issue | Required delivery |
|---|---|
| Source points and playground area polygons | Preserve points; use a point guaranteed inside each polygon area. |
Repeated play_id | Keep the first source_order. |
Padded name_raw | Trim into name. |
Deliver exactly play_id (text), name (text), source_kind (text) and Point geometry in EPSG:32756 (UTM zone 56S). Save the final GeoPackage with layer name playground_sites; assigning the CRS label without reprojection is not acceptable.
sydney-playgrounds-raw — GeoJSON, EPSG:4326, Point / Polygon geometry. The fields arrive under these names:
| field | type | meaning |
|---|---|---|
play_id | text | OSM node or way reference |
name_raw | text | Incoming playground name |
source_kind | text | OSM node or way |
source_order | integer | Priority order in incoming file |
Converting this layer to a Shapefile cuts a field name to ten characters — source_kind becomes source_kin, source_order becomes source_ord — so read the names back after any conversion rather than assuming them.
These are where the teaching is. Read them twice.
Modelled on a Sydney GIS data handover using © OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL 1.0). ISO 19157-1:2023 frames quality as fitness against the stated product specification.
Download the data from the Data tab, prepare it in the tool you use — QGIS, ArcGIS Pro, FME, GDAL or a script — and upload what came out.
Deliver as GeoPackage, layer playground_sites, in EPSG:32756.
Read shows what the file was read as; Submit grades it. The file itself is not kept — what was read from it is.
