How an answer was made: the sitting record

What the workspace notes while a candidate sits an assessment, what it never keeps, and how to read its notes.

Updated

Team workspaces are opened on request. Ask for one; this is how it works once yours is open.

What is recorded

While a candidate sits one of your assessments, the workspace notes how each answer was made:

  • When they opened each problem, and when they first started on it.
  • Each paste or drop of text — its length, never its words.
  • Each time they left the page, and for how long.
  • Each time they ran their answer.

An answer that is data — a file, GeoJSON, values — is never compared: handing in a result by paste is how it is handed in. The candidate is told all of this before they start.

What the notes say

What the record notes, on the scorecard, turns the record into sentences you can check:

The noteWhen it appears
Most of the final answer arrived by paste60% of it or more
A paste of so many charactersA paste of 200 characters or more, with how soon after the problem opened when it was within three minutes
A passing answer soon after the problem openedWithin two minutes of opening it
Near-identical to another candidate's answer85% alike or more, compared only with your own candidates
Left the page so many timesSix times or more, or five minutes or more away in all

Evidence, never a verdict

Nothing grades, fails or blocks a candidate on the record. Somebody who pastes from their own notes, or steps away to think, shows up here too — read a note against the rest of the scorecard, and ask the candidate if it matters to your decision.

Who sees it, and for how long

Your workspace sees its own candidates' records and nobody else's, and answers are compared only within the workspace. The moments are deleted a year after they happened; the answers, the score and the result stay with the sitting.
